Large Black and Tamworth Pigs

The pigs kept here at the Rodings Plantery are two traditional old breeds of England - both now rare breeds! We have Tamworths, originating somewhere are Tamworth in Staffordshire, and Large Blacks, originally prevalent from the south west all the way to Essex and Suffolk.

Our first pig here was a Large Black won in a raffle held by the RBST at their show and sale back in 1998. When we collected her we bought a Tamworth to keep her company and we now keep both breeds and have an onsite boar for each breed.

They both are reared for meat and also for pedigree breeding stock to ensure the future of these rare breeds.
